Celebrating 100 Years: John Inglis OAM

We’re proud to mark the 100th birthday of John Inglis OAM, whose name is synonymous with lift engineering in Australia and beyond.

John’s’ began his career in 1942 when he commenced an apprenticeship with Arnold Engineering & Lifts and later with Otis Elevator Company, his career and involvement in lift engineering has spanned more than eight decades involving roles in service, installation supervision, engineering management and executive leadership.

During this time John was involved in the design and installation of the T1 Power Station lift in the Snowy Mountain Hydro Scheme which at the time was the longest travel lift in the world.

John established Amron Lift Resources as an independent engineering consultancy and subsequently provided advice on lift design, compliance, expert reporting and standards, remaining professionally active well into his later years.

John became a member of the Lift Manufacturers Association (LMAA) at its conception in the1960’s and was appointed as an honorary member in the mid 1970’, his involvement continued through the decades with the Australian Elevator Association (AEA)

Johns’ contribution to lift and escalator standards development spans more than 50 years through his involvement with Standards Australia ME004 committee and the ISO TC178 International Standards Committee, where his experience and wealth of knowledge have been invaluable.

Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to engineering, John Inglis’ centenary is not only a celebration of longevity, but a tribute to a lifetime of leadership, mentorship and enduring commitment to the lift engineering profession.
