AAVT engages NSW Building Commission on key vertical transport issues

The Australian Association of Vertical Transport (AAVT) has met with NSW Building Commissioner James Sherrard and Daniela Cianci of the NSW Building Commission to discuss regulatory and industry issues affecting the vertical transport sector.

AAVT was represented by Chair Chris Jones, Board Members Ben Hopkins and Ben Fowler, Chief Executive Mark Liversedge and Company Secretary Rod Austin-Eames. Noel Smith represented the Lift Engineering Society of Australia (LESA), and Lindsay Le Compte, Managing Director of Le Compte Advisory.

The Building Commissioner provided an update on current legislative proposals and broader priorities of the Commission. Discussion included the proposed timetable for chain of responsibility legislation and co-regulation, early intervention in building defects, maintaining consumer confidence, declining entry into building trades, educational material developed for car stackers and disciplinary activities.

AAVT used the meeting to raise a number of issues requiring further consideration for the vertical transport industry, including:

  • resumption of the previous working party meetings to address current and emerging industry issues,
  • reconsideration of AAVT’s proposal for classes of design practitioners in vertical transport, particularly in light of the decreasing number of design practitioners operating in the sector,
  • clarification of current Building Commission design guidance material,
  • resolution of issues relating to design practitioner insurance requirements,
  • development of specific Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules for vertical transport design practitioners, and
  • identification of key vertical transport compliance issues.

Importantly, the NSW Building Commission agreed to convene a further meeting to discuss action plans for the matters raised by AAVT.

AAVT Chief Executive Mark Liversedge said direct engagement with regulators is an important part of AAVT’s role in representing the vertical transport industry.

AAVT will continue to engage with the NSW Building Commission as these matters progress and will provide further updates to members where relevant.
