Representatives from Building Commission NSW (BCNSW) recently visited Schindler’s engineering and training facilities as part of ongoing engagement between the regulator, the Australian Association of Vertical Transport (AAVT) and industry.
The visit followed earlier discussions between AAVT, Schindler and Building Commission NSW and provided an opportunity to strengthen understanding of vertical transport design, installation, technical requirements and regulatory responsibilities.
Eleven representatives from Building Commission NSW attended, including Senior Compliance Inspector Daniela Cianci, alongside AAVT CEO Mark Liversedge and members of Schindler’s senior management, engineering and technical teams.
Industry knowledge and technical demonstrations
Schindler’s National Product Quality and Safety Manager, Ben Hopkins, provided an overview of the company’s Australian operations and the vertical transport industry, including the processes involved in the design, installation, modernisation, repair and maintenance of lifts and escalators.
Schindler’s Head of Engineering, Dinesh Kanagasingam, presented an overview of lift design and configuration, explaining the use of pre-engineered systems and how equipment specifications are selected to meet operational requirements and applicable standards.
Participants also toured Schindler’s engineering and training facilities, including operational lift installations, an escalator, installation training shafts and simulators used to develop technicians’ and apprentices’ mechanical and electrical skills.
Supporting regulatory understanding
The visit provided an opportunity for open technical discussion between Building Commission NSW representatives and industry specialists.
Key topics included the responsibilities of Design Practitioners – Vertical Transport (DP-VT), coordination of building interface requirements, regulatory audits and the application of Regulated Design Guidance Material.
These discussions highlighted the importance of ongoing communication between regulators, designers, builders and vertical transport specialists to support a shared understanding of technical and regulatory requirements.
AAVT intends to continue its engagement with Building Commission NSW to promote greater clarity and consistency in the application of regulatory requirements affecting the vertical transport industry.
