About Us

Who We Are Today

The AAVT is the national industry body representing companies, professionals, and stakeholders across the full spectrum of vertical transport. Our members include lift and moving walkway manufacturers, installation and service providers, modernisation specialists, engineers, consultants, suppliers, and technical experts who contribute to the safe and efficient movement of people and goods throughout Australia’s buildings and infrastructure.

Our Story: A Legacy of Industry Leadership

Founded in 1961 as the Lift Manufacturers’ Association of Australia (LMAA), we began as a national forum supporting companies involved in the design, manufacture and development of lifts and vertical transport systems.

We became officially known as the Australian Elevator Association in 1981, continuing to provide trusted guidance and representation for more than 40 years as the vertical transport industry grew and modernised across Australia’s construction and infrastructure sectors.

Our Evolution: Introducing the Australian Association of Vertical Transport (AAVT)

As Australia’s vertical transport industry expanded—driven by innovative technologies, stricter building safety requirements and increasing regulatory oversight—the role of the Association broadened significantly. The industry now spans lift design, installation, maintenance, modernisation, engineering, safety, compliance, consultancy, and training across the built environment. To reflect this wider scope and strengthened advocacy role, the Association formally registered and adopted the name Australian Association of Vertical Transport (AAVT) in October 2025.
